Those Who Saw The Sun
CASE STUDY
For Those Who Saw the Sun: African American Oral Histories from the Jim Crow South by Jaha Nailah Avery, I had the privilege of designing the book cover and interior layout. This powerful collection of oral histories preserves the voices of Black elders from the American South who lived through the Jim Crow era, providing firsthand accounts of a fraught period in American history. My goal was to create a visual design that reflects the gravity and significance of these stories, ensuring that the book’s presentation resonates with its profound content.

CUSTOM MAP FOR END PAGES
For the end pages, I designed a custom map that serves as a visual representation of the cities where the interviewees lived. This map was carefully crafted to honor the geographical and cultural diversity of the individuals whose stories are told in the book. Each city is a testament to the rich history and varied experiences of African Americans during the Jim Crow era, and the map visually anchors these narratives within their real-world contexts.
INSPIRATION BEHIND THE DESIGN
The design process for Those Who Saw the Sun began with a mood board that was as bold and vibrant as the stories it would encompass. I chose a palette of rich colors—blue, pink, green, brown, and red—to evoke the diverse emotions and experiences shared by the interviewees. The mood board also featured a blend of classic and eccentric typography, inspired by books that aren’t afraid to make a statement. My intention was to craft a design that would not only capture the eye but also reflect the strength and resilience of the voices within.
