Designing for ‘Black Friend’: A Creative Exploration

Working on the cover design for Ziwe’s book Black Friend: Essays was an incredibly fun and engaging experience. Although the final design chosen by the Art Director wasn’t one of my concepts, I found joy in the creative process. I was encouraged to dive into Ziwe’s Instagram, specifically looking for photos of her with her white friends, which added a unique and playful element to the cover options I developed. I also used the images provided to me to craft a variety of covers, each reflecting different facets of Ziwe’s bold and thought-provoking style.

I’m excited to share the cover designs I presented to the Art Director, along with the final cover they selected. While my designs weren’t the final choice, I’m proud of the work I did and the creative direction it took. Below, you can explore the covers that could have been, and see the final design that made it to print. You can find that here.

This one was my favorite:

Alright, until next time, stay blessed!
