In 2020, I had the privilege of designing the branding for Hair By Susy, a project that was especially meaningful to me after knowing Susy Oludele for over a decade. As a fellow first-generation Nigerian, I deeply understood Susy’s vibrant, bold personality and her love for the color purple, which became central to the branding. This comprehensive brand guideline has since informed the branding of her salons in New York and Los Angeles, ensuring consistency across all touchpoints of her business.

The inspiration for Hair By Susy’s branding stemmed from Susy’s dynamic persona and her Nigerian heritage. Knowing her love for purple, I made it a focal point in the color palette, complemented by bold, rich tones that reflect her vibrant energy. The typefaces chosen were modern yet expressive, capturing the essence of Susy’s unique style. My goal was to create a visual identity that not only represented Susy’s personality but also resonated with her clientele, celebrating the beauty and strength of Black women.

To elevate Hair By Susy’s online presence, I designed a series of social media templates that are as bold and eye-catching as Susy’s hairstyles. These templates allowed for consistent branding across platforms, while also giving Susy the flexibility to showcase her latest work, promotions, and events. The designs incorporated elements from the brand guidelines, ensuring a cohesive look that aligns with her brand’s overall aesthetic.

One of the most rewarding projects was designing Lady: A Celebration of Women, which was not only a beautiful showcase of Susy’s work but also my first book design. Having full creative control over the project allowed me to truly bring Susy’s vision to life, celebrating the artistry and empowerment of Black women. The book features interviews with Susy and four other Nigerian beauty influencers, making it a powerful testament to the influence and inspiration of women in the beauty industry. This project was a pivotal moment in my career, laying the foundation for the cohesive branding work that followed in 2020.

Most recently, I had the opportunity to redesign Susy’s website, HairBySusy.com. The updated design elevates the overall visual experience, with a strong emphasis on mobile usability. My goal was to create a seamless and engaging experience for visitors, allowing them to easily explore Susy’s portfolio, book appointments, and connect with her brand. The redesign not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also improves functionality, making it easier for Susy to manage her online presence.
